Strain description

  • Very commonly used outbred rat.
  • Females are good foster mothers.
  • Tendency to become very fat with age.
  • Spontaneous clonic convulsions have been reported.
  • Young females are very active.
  • Barbering is commonly observed.
  • Originally bred at the Wistar Institute from albino stock purchased in 1906. Widely disseminated throughout the world since 1911.
  • Breeding stock refreshed from Charles River Laboratories, USA. Passed directly into the SPF barrier after quarantine in flexible film isolator to verify SPF status.
  • Imported in Animal Resource Centre (ARC) Western Australia in 1999.
  • Stock strain is transferred to Ozgene ARC in 2023
