Brain mouseBrain matters

As our population continues to age and life expectancies increase, so does the burden of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. That’s why Associate Professor Elizabeth Coulson of the Queensland Brain Institute, The University of Queensland, is focusing her research on this debilitating disease.

Dr Coulson has developed a deep interest into identifying and characterising the genetic regulators of neurodegenerative disorders. Her current research specifically focuses on cell death signalling mediated by the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) and its role in the cholinergic neurons of the brain. As part of this, she is investigating the connection between disturbed sleep and Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the research is to use the findings to develop treatments for neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Mouse models provided by Ozgene are an important part of Dr Coulson’s research.

As an extension of her work in mouse models, Dr Coulson is developing methods to assess cholinergic degeneration by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission spectrography (PET). that can be translated between humans and animal models of dementia.

We hope that one day soon, Alzheimer’s will be forgotten!
