Dr Benedikt Wefers – Strategic Partnering Senior Scientist

Benedikt joined Ozgene in October 2025 as Strategic Partnering Senior Scientist, overseeing scientific and strategic partnerships across Europe. He is based in Munich, Germany and brings more than 15 years of expertise in animal model generation and advanced genetic engineering for preclinical research.
He earned his PhD from TU Munich in 2011, where his research focused on genetic mouse models to advance the understanding of emotional behaviours. Following his doctoral work, Benedikt continued as a postdoctoral researcher at Helmholtz Center Munich, developing innovative genome modification tools for in vivo gene editing and improving the efficiency of precise gene targeting technologies. Benedikt then established and led the Mouse Genome Engineering Unit at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, where he generated numerous animal disease models to support neuroscience research and neurodegenerative disease studies.
Prior to joining Ozgene, Benedikt worked at Taconic Biosciences as a Scientific Program Manager. In this capacity, he provided expert consultation and strategic support to pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and academic institutions, helping them optimise research pipelines and accelerate scientific discovery.
When he’s not on video calls or travelling to meet fellow scientists to talk about their projects, you will most likely find him exploring remote mountain landscapes with his backpack.
