I am pleased to announce that we are now a signatory to the Australian Openness Agreement on Animal Research and Teaching, developed by the Australian and New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Teaching (ANZCCART).

The Openness Agreement is a voluntary national initiative that encourages organisations involved in animal research to communicate openly about why animals are used, the benefits they help deliver, the ethical oversight that governs their use, and the ongoing efforts to minimise harm through the principles of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement (the 3Rs).

For us, signing the Agreement is a natural extension of our commitment to responsible science and animal welfare. It aligns with the values that guide our organisation every day and complements our recent full AAALAC International accreditation, reflecting the highest standards of animal care, ethical practice and continuous improvement.

Animal models continue to play an essential role in advancing medical discoveries that improve both human and animal health. At the same time, we recognise that their use carries an important ethical responsibility. Every activity we undertake is subject to rigorous ethical review and regulatory oversight, and we continually seek opportunities to reduce animal use, refine procedures and replace animals with alternative methods wherever scientifically possible.

At Ozgene, we also contribute to the 3Rs through innovations such as goGermline™, which reduces the number of animals required during custom model generation, and through colony management strategies that help minimise surplus breeding while maintaining high-quality research outcomes.

Becoming a Signatory reinforces our commitment to engaging openly and honestly with our customers, partners, regulators and the broader community. We believe that transparency strengthens confidence in scientific research and encourages informed, respectful discussion about the role animals continue to play in advancing medical and biological knowledge.
